From Italia '61 to the Olympics
The Palavela (originally Palazzo a Vela) was built between 1959 and 1961 for the Italia '61 exhibition celebrating the centenary of Italian unification. Designed by Annibale and Giorgio Rigotti with engineers Franco Levi and Nicolas Esquillan, it is famous for its self-supporting, double-ribbed concrete shell roof, roughly 130 metres in diameter and shaped like a billowing sail.
Ahead of the 2006 Turin Winter Olympics the building was substantially renovated by Gae Aulenti and Arnaldo De Bernardi, preserving the iconic silhouette while adapting the interior for top-level sport. The Palavela hosted Olympic figure skating and short-track speed skating, and went on to host the 2010 ISU World Figure Skating Championships, the Davis Cup 2013 and the 2015 European Men's Volleyball Championship. Today it stages concerts, sports and conventions for up to 12,200 spectators.
