TEATRO REGIO TORINO
Turin's Royal Opera House
The Teatro Regio opened in 1740 as the court theatre of the House of Savoy, designed by architect Benedetto Alfieri. It immediately became one of the most admired theatres on the Grand Tour, and is forever associated with two world premieres conducted by a young Arturo Toscanini: Puccini's Manon Lescaut in 1893 and, three years later, La Bohème on 1 February 1896.
A devastating fire destroyed the auditorium on the night of 8 February 1936, leaving only the original facade. Rebuilt by architect Carlo Mollino with engineer Marcello Zavelani Rossi, the contemporary elliptical hall — 1,750 seats around 37 perimeter boxes — was inaugurated on 10 April 1973 with Verdi's I Vespri Siciliani, staged by Maria Callas and Giuseppe Di Stefano. The Regio is now considered a landmark of post-war Italian theatre architecture.
